Why won't my printer print?

I have an HP 1500 series printer (which I've never used as a printer but only for copying). I've installed the software and the printer itself is working but when I connect it to my laptop and try to print nothing happens. The icon on the laptop is ticked as ready but when I go into the box under properties on the print page it says it doesn't appear in the directory. It's driving me mad, please can someone help in a non technical way or I won't understand. By the way my USB lead is very loose when I plug it into the printer.

  1. either ink is low or there is a problem with the printer or your USB is damaged
