Question:

Why won't my washing machine spin?

It is a large capacity Whirlpool. I bought it used 6 years ago. No telling how old it was before I purchased it. It has been working fine up until a few months ago. When it gets to the spin cycle, it makes the motorized spinning noise, but the washer won't move. Also, water is leaking from one side of it.

What is wrong with it? Can it be fixed? How long do washers generally last?

  1. Sounds like the belt or pully is shot, maybe the pump is leaking as well.

Consider replacing your washer or dryer when a repair will cost more than half the price of a comparably equipped new appliance. Our repair data show that it often doesn’t pay to repair any dryer or top-loading washer that’s more than six years old or any front-loading washer that’s more than seven years old.

  2. A well-maintained washer can last indefinitely.  By well-maintained I mean one that gets regular service from a technician.  My grandmother had a washer that lasted over 20 years (we just sold it when she passed away in May).

The problem you're having is obviously mechanical.  It might be a belt or a cog, but the only way to know would be to call out a technician.  They will take a look and give you an estimate before you authorize repairs.  If it's going to be more cost effective to fix than replace, then you can do that...but at least you'll know what's going on.
