Question:

Why won't my weed eater stay on?

My gas powered weed eater will start, but will not run at all in full choke and will barely stay running and frequently stops even in half choke. If I get the air flow almost closed it seems to run best. How is restricting air flow helping the thing to run? This makes no sense to me, but I don't know much about engines.

  1. check the oil. change it if necessary. i know I have to change mine after every 15 hours of operation. If you have recently changed the oil, you may have accidently gotten some on the spark plugs and hat is causing a bad connection. Expose the plugs and wipe down with a soft cloth to clean them. It may be as simple as needing more gas. Is it possible you may have put the wrong gas into the tank? Mixed fuel into the just gas chamber or vice versa?

  2. you need fuel, air and spark to make a engine run...  too much of one will cause you to have your problem.... If you are having to close the choke completely you are not getting enough fuel to the carb.Or your you need a new spark plug because an fowled plug will not have a good spark for the amount of fuel. A good carb cleaning and a new carb kit(inexpensive for weed eaters) should do the trick,,, oh after the carb cleaning change the plug...you could just have trash in the carb and a good cleaning will take care of everything.

  3. Check to see if there is a spark arrester screen on the exhaust. It could be stopped up and restricting exhaust flow. I had the same problem with mine several times until I just took it off for good. Drove me crazy.
