Question:

Why won't one of the dustcaps on my wheel hub stay in place?

I can't see any way of getting it to stay in place. I need to know how to make it stay in place soon, because I will be having it built into a wheel soon - unless the problem is insolvable and I will have to replace it. It is on a fifty year old oil lubricated hub with the collar-type cones on the axel, if that makes any difference. I don't suppose that anyone can help, but it can't hurt to ask.

  1. You need to bend the edges so they grip.

  2. Hold it in place and then KICK it darling. That will do the trick

  3. Well, this might be a bad thing. It depends how you took it off... if you used a screwdriver to prize it out then you might be out of luck especially if it bent as you removed it.

I suggest that you put the dustcap in place evenly on the hub then use a socket the same size as the outer diameter of the cap, place it over the axle and onto the cap and tap it in place. Should only take one or 2 taps.

  4. you know how you s***w the top back on a bottle of coke?

    well...
