Why won't sim free blackberry curve 8310 work?

Today I bought the above at Carphone Warehouse. When I got home I followed the instructions to insert my sim (pay monthly from 02). When I put the battery in it shows an hourglass, then a white screen with a crossed out rectangle with symbols on , and the numbers 3,4,5 at the bottom. I tried a T-mobile sim with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like the phone does not have an operating system on it. If you bought it and it was supposed to be working out of the box with any SIM, you should return it.
