  1. Simple - You have to convert the file into a mp4. file ( Only type of movie file playable on a Ipod) theres tons of free converters out there even online ones just google it up.

  2. You can't because its illegal. Third party software could seriously mess with your computer.

Get an Itunes Gift Card and start purchasing rentals from Itunes. Its much easier.

  3. You should make sure the video is MP4 or H2.64 video for iPod. Here is a step by step guide about converting DVD, Videos, Flash and Youtube videos to iPod

Other useful information you can get on Apple official site:

  4. You need a converter to help you, because most of movies/videos formats are not play on iPod directly.  I downloaded Cucusoft iPod Video Converter Suite to help me at http://www.dvdipodsoft.com/ipod-video-co...

This software can convert both DVD's and videos to ipod directly. It's fast, easy and very wonderful. I think it is a good choose. You can download it to help you too.
