Why won't vodka freeze?

Is it true? Why does that happen?

Any spirit that's over 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof) won't freeze.  Gin, vodka, whisky, all of them you can toss in the freezer.  The alcohol content is what keeps it from freezing.

It is because of the alcohol in both vodka and gin that do not freeze.  They do, however, become viscose (thick-creamy) which is the way many people prefer to drink them on the rocks.  I know people who keep vodka and gin in the freezer so that they will remain in the thick form for the reason they say it tastes better.

It has high levels of ethanol (alcohol) in it, which has a very low freezing temperature.  You can freeze it, just not in any freezer someone would have in their home.  

Something like beer (which also has alcohol) will freeze though, because it also has a lot of water in it and relatively low levels of alcohol.

Vodka has a lot of ethanol, the part of beer, wine, and liquor that makes them alcoholic. That has a lower freezing point than water.

If you got vodka (or any other liquid) cold enough, it would freeze. A normal freezer isn't cold enough to freeze vodka, though, so it will just make it very cold.

Other strong liquors would also not freeze in the freezer. Gin is often kept in the freezer, too, as it is often served very cold. (Mmm...martini!)

It won't freeze in a household freezer because the alcohol reduces the freezing temperature of the water.

It can freeze, but you'd have to lower the temperature quite a bit.
