Why won't windows let me burn information on DVD-RW discs?

They are memorex 4.7GB, I run windows xp home edition. Everytime I try to copy and paste a file (ANY file) onto CD Drive(E:) it says Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder, what do you want Windows to do? Giving me the options of Retry (never works), Skip (well I can't skip everything), and Cancel (once again defeats the purpose). Anyone know if I need to download something or what?

  1. To add to the above poster. I have this problem as well.  Exactly the same actually. Mine is definitely for DVD burning as i've had it a year and burned many dvd's, it also won't burn anything at all. It was also working this morning with the exact same types of cd's. It cannot have anythign to do with the actual CD/DVD as you usually can put your files in the "to burn" folder without injecting a disc - you just can't burn them. The problem is putting things into this folder. It says exactly what the above poster said.  Secondly, it has nothing to do with drag and drop either as that doesn't work either.  If anybody has an answer to this please shout out.

  2. Your CD unit may be just that; for CD's only, which will not burn DVD's.

Check to see what you've got: Start >My Computer >right click the CD player icon > Properties: here it will say if it's a CD ROM (read only) CD RW (read and write), and maybe DVD ROM or DVD-RW.

If it has the 'RW' values for DVD, then a DVD burner application would be in your "all Programs' menu.  It usually is from the manufacturer of the CD unit.

Prepare your files to be written, then open that DVD burn application and follow the prompts.

  3. You can't copy and paste you need to drag & drop.  Unfortunately I do not work with Windows XP much anymore, just Vista.
