  1. The hockey stick data was released and it was found that this "peer reviewed" graph was seriously flawed.

The math used was so bad that even random numbers created the same hockey stick curve.

We need to give credit where credit is due and thank Steve McIntyre for discovering the flaws that major climatologist missed.

  2. The data (most of which wasn't his, he just analyzed it) HAS been released in several scientific publications (cited below). The graph HAS been replicated, many times.

Mann's statistical methods averaged the data out too much.  As a result, things like the Medieval Warm Period were smoothed out (partly because it wasn't such a big deal).  But the eminent National Academy of Sciences said that his basic conclusion, that the present time is the warmest in hundreds of years, was correct.

Here's the data replicated with better statistical methods.  The MWP is clearly shown.   The peer reviewed references are given at the end of the website (which is not a wikipedia article that can be edited).

Ben O - Not all scientists agree.  Just about 99% of them.

  3. The flaw in Mann's method is that did some unjustified weighting on his data sets.  By normalising the data with a zero mean and dividing by the twentieth century mean he was dividing data sets by numbers very close to zero and was able to get results which had no relationship to the data.

For people who have faith in AGW, Mann's work just reinforced what they already believed.  Their faith doesn't require proof, but they still insist that this is "science" and that all scientists agree.

  4. he did release his program, eventually. other reconstructions fall well within its error bars and most (all that ive seen) have a hockey stick component and all place the past decades as the hottest in resent times.

the only problems with the original hockey stick graph were that it averaged out to much variation and it used one or two "bad" proxys.

http://members.shaw.ca/sch25/FOS/Climate... scroll down and you can see the corrected graph, compared with the wrong one. His graph was wrong, and has been criticised.

  6. 1. the data is available.

    2. it is flawed.

    3. his supporters still support the overall conclusions.

  7. The original graph was published almost a decade ago, in 2006 it was re-evaluated by the National Academy of Science and found it to be fundamentally correct.

It is a myth of blog sites that it is discredited.

  8. "Andrew Q" is correct this was never discredited in the way the denier groups seem to be pushing and was checked several years ago by the National Academy of Science.

What they actually said is in the link below.

  9. The data used was purposely "doctored" and made to fit so the results would come out as desired.  Some data is flawed due to the way it is collected.  Temperature readings from the official sites, mainly paved airports, may be 10 degrees higher than in an open area in a forest a mile away.  Satellite data which is more accurate shows a much slower increase in temperature.

In reality it is more like 20% of the scientists who support GW and they are generally dependent on government or Leftist oriented organisations for their jobs.  They are also in the government sponsored groups and those sponsored by Leftist academics.  It is not a conspiracy, they all just think the same way and support each others positions.

The medieval warm period was warmer than now, because for decades the Viking colonists in Greenland grew wheat.  Today you can't grow wheat in Greenland,  Dr. Mann denies that fact so that he can make his theory work..

  10. Who is dr mann? What is this hockey stick graph data? Explain yourself for a global audience, my friend.
