  1. I am not completely sure of the details, but a few things could be preventing you from getting a map. For GPS devices to work, it all focuses on satellites that send it data. If you aren't able to get any maps to show, you might try:

    1) Making sure the batteries or power source is working correctly. I'm not trying to be insulting here, but simply systematic and ruling everything out. See if your GPS has a test mode or something diagnostic to see if it is working correctly. I'd check with the manufacturer, possibly even the website to see if there is technical documentation ("white papers") on your make and model device.

    2) Confirm that you have available service. The manufacturer probably has to have or participate with a network of satellites above where you are for the GPS device to work. Unless there is some specific exclusion or warning on the container about limited service; I'd check with the manufacturer and/or website again to see if there is a forum, messageboard and/or e-mail support for questions about getting it to work right.

    3) Find out who else in your area has a GPS device and see what service they use and/or what they did when they ran into problems.

    4) I'd also check to see if there are any limitations with your specific device on what might interfere with it receiving signals. Power lines, junction boxes and other high concentrations of electric power generate magnetic fields which could hamper reception.  In fact, anything that has electricity running through it gives off a magnetic field. I'd look into it to at least rule it out as a problem.

    5) You might even see if there is a geocaching group near you. Maybe you could find one on-line and ask them. Even if you can't physically participate, you might be able to find specific help with your GPS model. You might also checking with State Parks. I know that the State Parks I travel to with my family rents them out and has rangers who can show you how to use them. They might be a resource for you too.

Sometimes, problems can have several layers. The important thing to keep in mind when trying to isolate the trouble is to be as systematic as possible....in other words, come up with a step-by-step plan to make sure you are only changing one issue at a time. Don't change more than one setting or aspect because you won't be able to tell which one fixed (or messed up) your device.

  2. GPS was originally built by and for the military. As such it is able to pinpoint your location anywhere in the world. Because of this I would say that the maps for Alaska are not loaded on your GPS device, but try contacting customer support.
