Question:

Why wont my cable modem provide a signal to all comps on the network?

i recently upgraded to cable internet and have it installed in the basement plugged into an 8 port wired switch. i only have 5 cables going out. right now, i only have 2 plugged in- the office and my room. i cant get a signal to come through on both comps. if both cables are plugged in, then only the office gets a signal.

the only way for me to get a signal on my bed room comp is to plug only my cable into the switch and reset the system.

any ideas why this is happening?

i used to have a DSL modem with this same setup and i had no problems getting a clean signal on all 5 lines.

  1. you might be have an ip addressing issue. go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew". Hope this works

  2. Your DSL "modem" had a built in router that was able to issue IP addresses via DHCP.

You need a router, not a switch.

You connect the router to your cable modem.  The router is able to issue IP addresses to up to 253 computers on your network via DHCP.
