Why wont my computer let me defragment?

its a 95 computer...mother in laws...but im trying to clean it up becuz its really slow. It says i cant defragment...ne ideas why?...and ne other ideas how to clean it up some so its not so slow?...thankx a bunch

Hi There

First, run chkdsk and afterwards, it will allow you to defrag but not before. Chkdsk will check and delete cross-linked files which is what is preventing the defrag to work.
