I have a 7 month old standard poodle, and every time he sees someone, he will run after them, and I try to get him to come back, and I run after him for 5 minutes, until I catch him or he goes on our yard, he never listens, also when I want to bring him inside, he will run around, and I can never catch him, why does he do this? Why doesn't he listen to me?

  1. You have not taken the time to train him properly, including but not limited to respecting your authority. Dogs, being pack animals look for the alpha... the pack leader. Your dog does not recognize you as the leader and thus ignores you.

  2. he is still a pup. schooling for the both of you would be good. He has to know that you are "alpha Dog". The " Dog Whisper" is a good show to watch also.

  3. 7 month old is like a teenager. He will at some stage.

  4. mabey it thinks your ugly

  5. he may not like you.

  6. He simply doesn't respect you as the alpha dog. You need to seek advice from a trained handler on this one or go to some dog obedience classes where they can show you how you're supposed to behave with them.

  7. Sounds like you need to purchase a choke collar; and learn to use it. This dog apparently hasn't been long line trained. This kind of training when properly done is the only thing that works.

  8. 1) He's a puppy

    2) Poodles are a high strung breed to begin with.  I grew up with them.

    3) Your voice has to be stern like you mean it. High pitch callings are not going to get your poodle to come to you

    4) Be firm but not abusive.  Discipline is the key.  If you need help with your pet, get a trainer to help you.

I do hate that running in circles thing they do, makes no sense.

    Good luck

  9. Same problem with my dog.

I AM the leader of my dog. I AM behaving like one but he only comes to me when it's for food... If she has gone elsewhere I call her and she does not come... I shout to her, I chase her, she hides under the bed. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!...

  10. He might not listen because he thinks your a play-mate. This means he is treating you as more a friend then a leader. You should try to make him think your the leader, instead of the playmate. A way to do this is by eating your food first in the morning then feeding him because the leader always eats first. Good Luck!

  11. Simply because you haven't trained him.  Clearly your dog has not earned the privilege of being off leash yet, but you still allow him off leash.  His recall is non-existent, perhaps because you never trained it in the first place or perhaps because you successfully taught him that coming to you ends all of his fun (and if fun time ends every time he comes to you, what reason does he have to come when you call?).

Try signing him up for training classes.  Even if he has already gone to a basic class he clearly was not properly trained the first time around.

  12. you trained him wrong. to me he seems happy to please so your to blame. Never run after him, then its a game. try to run in the opposite direction and have a fantastic time. Dont ever punish him when he comes back.

Meanwhile keep him on a leash and seek a trainers help, this is a potentially dangerous situation.

  13. Sounds like the dog just needs some training. 7 months is a great age to start training and male dogs are a little thick in the head when it comes to listening. It's not that they don't understand you, it's that they want to see if they can get away with being bad because they want to jockey for that alpha dog position.

I would invest in some training books and really do a couple of months of solid training because later in your dogs adult age it will pay off. Or take them to training classes. The training classes are probably better because you also get to train your dog how to be social with other dogs.

  14. You need to provide DOG TRAINING for your poodle.

This happened because your poodle has not been trained.

If you train you pup well, he will respect you as his master and will listen to your command whenever you ask him.

You need to train him by using COME command.

Almost all dogs can be temporarily distracted by something exciting, you can enforce your COME command by attracting your dog attention by calling him name energetic and enthusiastically. Do not forget to give him verbal praise when he is able to follow your command! This is very important as dogs enjoy doing things that pleased his master.

  15. when i try to chase my dog to catch her, she runs too. I think that's she thinks it's a game. so I use treats to trick her. see if that works. maybe it only works for my poodle because she's a glutton.

oh, and try putting on a leash. and maybe you haven't done any obedience training?

  16. You need to start teaching some simple commands to your dog like SIT, STAY, COME etc. Give some treats to the dog if he acts what you say.
