Why wont my mercury boat motor go into gear?

  1. Check your linkage for travel length first.Open cowling and expose shifter. Make sure its in nuetral.Then measure the distance it travels to engage. You should check engine book on distance that it should travel.If its not there the check your cable throw to see if it travels enough to engage.

    If all that checks out then look into the foot of motor the shifting rod may have either broken or has miss aligned itself.

  3. If your tying to engage it when the motor is not running it likely won't.  Start it up and then try,  If the motor is running hope for a simple adjustment fix.  Or it could be worse.

  4. Hey nce, it's gotta be runnin for an easy shift....secondly, check the shift linkage...probably needs adjustment. If you're out of the water...get a 25gal bucket for the motor or buy water cups for your hose.
