Why wont my nikon coolpix lens retract?

i bought this camera 2 months ago. and i only use it occasionally, but the lens dont retract sometimes and pops out a 'lens error' sign on the screen.. and when i take photos sometimes, my lens go blur no matter what mode im using it just goes really blurry.. whats wrong with it? and it only happens sometime now and then. but today the lens keep erroring and wont retract.. do i need to get it fixed/exchanged?

  1. If you bought it at reputable store like Circuit City or good camera store, they should be still exchangeable within 30 days. Your camera should have a year manufacturer warranty so, maybe the store would acknowledge it. If not, most likely they will tell you to call Nikon and tell them what happened. As long as you didn't accidentally dropped it or banged it, they should honor it. If they don't complain to the BBB, and they will send them a letter which in turn the manufacturer will take it more seriously.


  2. Sounds to me like there is a definate fault on the lens motors.  You say it is around two months old, which I think is past the time when normal retailers will exchange it.

    I would suggest having it repaired before the damage gets worse.  Sometimes this could be caused by a physical knock to the camera, other times the motors just go bad, or a bit of sand may have gotten into the mechanism.

    See first if you can have it repaired under warranty, however if they find physical / abuse damage, they will charge you for the repair.
