  1. Well it could be a couple of things so let's go through a diagnostic approach:

    First a little more info:

    - Do you connect with a wired or wireless setup?  If wireless, switch to a wired connection to ensure the router is configured.

If you connect with an Ethernet cable (wired), do you see any status lights on the router and your PC where the wire is connected?  What color light?

Have you tried using another cable or computer to connect?  Maybe the Ethernet cable or NIC card in your PC is bad.

http://192.168.1.1 is generally the default address for the admin page so either you can't connect due to hardware (cable, NIC, or router) failure or you have a configuration issue (trying to connect with improper wireless configuration from previous router setup or improper wired configuration).

  2. That is a default IP assigned from a router to give to the first computer using the connection on a hard line.

There could be quite a few issues of why it is not working.. send me an IM on Yahoo Messenger and I can go through them with you.

  3. Netgear is:

    http://192.168.0.1

    user name: admin   password: password

  4. typically netgear uses 192.168.0.1, try that one instead.
