Why wont my playstation3 read discs?

Every time I put a disc into my PS3 it wont read the disc, can't even hear the disk spinning. I got it last December, haven't used it enough for it to be worn out yet. Did the system update a few days ago which is I think when the issue started.

I don't want to get a replacement because I can't back-up all the downloads I've bought. Can some one help please!

All the downloads from the playstation store can be re downloaded off of your ps3 account for free. just make sure you remember all your account login information before you send it in.
