Question:

Why would I have better picture using component rather than HDMI?

I have a 32" Samsung 720p and I'm using a Samsung upconvert DVD player. When I use the component interface I have a beautiful picture, but when I use HDMI, the picture quality is noticeably reduced. When I first tried this I was using a relatively cheap HDMI cable so I purchased a more expensive cable but with the same results.

Any input would be appreciated.

  2. You have just discovered that picture quality is not dependent on the particular transport, but correctly that it is the whole picture of media, set up, and equipment. I believe the HDMI is using a lot of error frames in your case and the pixel height is not correctly syncing thru the rescaler in your set. The rescaler in you source device is obviously superior to your TVs. Although there is some decoding of signal before the HDMI transport it depends a lot on the TV.

  3. Personly I think it may be because your TV doesn't support HDMI the same way it supports Component. My TV has no difference between Component and regular but HDMI is way clear so its really wierd, I hate overcomplicated electronics...

  4. I don't personally know your particular equipment, but I would check the HDMI settings on your DVD player. You might need to tell the player specifically to output 720p over HDMI. It could be outputting 480i/p by default. (Or it could be outputting 1080i/p and your TV can't handle that resolution well.)
