Why would I have lower back pain after running?

I don't know what's important to tell so, here's my facts:

-16 years old

-115 pounds, give or take

-5'7"

-I've maintained pretty good hydration as well as eating proteins and all of that before and after working out.

I've been running daily for about a month now. Most days I jog about 3 or 4 miles, depending on the heat. I've also been weight lifting.

Since the first day, and now tonight, I've been getting really terrible pain in my lower back. The pain has always been in the sides, kind of like, gluteus metius area. It doesn't really feel like a muscle ache, it feels more like I've been hit. It hurts to the touch, too, right along the top of my pelvis. The pain begins after about the first half mile so bad that I can't run anymore. I used to run daily, and never had this problem. Then I sort of took a year off from physical everything, and now, it hurts. I'm going to be honest, I think it could be caused by the little bit of back fat I have burning off, ha. I don't know.

HELP! thanks

  1. since you can't take time off and that would be best, try sleeping an extra 1/2 hour

keep up the hydration and protein!

but keep it easy and mention it to your teacher

iceing is great 10 min on 10 min off for and hour or two before bed

    good luck feel better

also, i bet it isn't back fat burning off... :D he he

  2. You are actually a little bit underweight, just so you know. I am assuming though that you have not seen a doctor, I would say look into seeing if you fractured your Iliac crest. When this happens it will hurt where your pants would rest on your hips or where you may rest your hands on your hips. This is not the most common injury though, usually to fracture the Iliam crest your have to hit it off from something.

It could also possible be your sciatic nerve with referred pain to your lower back. The sciatic nerve is much easier to damage, it could be over use, another muscle could be inflammed and rubbing up against the nerve the wrong way, or the nerve could be pinched at the sciatic notch by your periformus muscle in your hip.

Now if you jumped your mileage to quickly when you started running than I would lean more towards the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve can make you hurt almost anywhere from your lower back to your ankle. I would ice the top of the nerve to give you some relief. To do that you will need 2 or 3 packs of ice. Put one pack in the small of you back, and the other 1 or 2 under your butt or off to the side where it is hurting. Only do the minum that you need to pass your gym class. Take it as easy as you can for the next week. I would say if it is still bothering in 2 weeks, go to the doctor. Preferebly an orthopedic or sports med doctor. If an X-Ray does not show anything and it continues to hurt go for an MRI or bone scan.  Good luck.

  3. it is true that its probably not fat given that your BMI may say you're quite underweight (I'm pretty skinny and I'm 5'6" and 130).  I used to have the same problem of back pain, but not to the extent you have.  Three things caused mine: one reason was that i was jutting my butt out back a bit when I run, which puts stress on your lower back as transferred from the thighs.  second was that i generally have a weak back and need to do back strengthening exercises. third, depending on how flat your feet are and what support you are using, this adds to the stress transferred to your back. with your problem, it sounds more serious if it is really that sensitive to touch.  i would go see a sports physician.

  4. Stop running. This doesn't sound as if it is related to the excersising. Sounds like a kidney infection. Get to a doctor. By the way, at 5'7" and 115 lbs. I doubt you have any extra "fat" anywhere.

  5. It happens to me too here's my facts:

    -14 years old

    -175 pounds (80kilos)

    -5"9

It happens to me when I'm at the end of my run or push my fitness boundaries and I start too slump and it strains my lower back.

Try to keep a straight back and it will help (it did for me)

    -cheers :)
