Why would I want/need a DNS server?

I have Windows Server 2008, which can run a DNS server. Why would I want to? Why not just use the ISP DNS servers? Does this allow me to make my own domain name and have it point to my webserver? FOr example, can I use my DNS server to make a domain name such as brianT.com to route to my webserver IP address for free? I already use DynDNS, but still... THank you very much for any help! It is highly appreciated! :-)

  1. usually, if you were to enable this feature on the server, it would be to use it as the DNS server for OTHER systems/servers.
