OK MY BOYFRIENDS EX IS PREGNANT & CLAIMS ITS HIS, OK SO HE IS GOIN THROUGH ALL THE BASICS TIL BIRTH TO DO THE DNA, BUT YESTERDAY SHE CALLS TO SAY THE DOC WANTS TO PERFORM A TEST FOR DOWN SNYDROME NOT ONLY ON HER BUT HTE UNBORN BABY & POSSIBLY EVEN THE FATHER, NOW I HAVE GIVEN BIRTH TO 2 CHILDREN & HAVE NEVER HAD A DOCTOR WITH THIS REQUEST, SHOULD'N THERE BE A REASON, DID HE FIND SOMETHING SOMEWHERE? ALSO THAT TEST IS PERFORMED BY AMNIO, CORRECT SO CAN'T THEY GO AHEAD & DO THE DNA THEN AS WELL IT THAT IS THE CASE?

  1. I think they can do the amnio to determine the DNA yes!  There is a blood test that I took (cant remember exactly what its called) to determine weather they will do the amnio.  In most cases even after they do the blood test they will do and ultrasound and if the ultrasound comes back ok then they wont do an amnio b/c of the risks involved.  Its also done on most women who are 35 and older maybe 40.  Im only 23 and my doc just told me most of this when I went and asked about having an amnio done.  She really didnt receomend it b/c im so young!

  2. she is probably lieing. down syndrome means u r retarded and can do anything your self.

  3. If they are doing amniocentesis, they can indeed check for paternity. Sounds to me like she just wants him to worry

  4. She probably got a positive blood test result. The only reason a doctor would ask for the fathers testing would be if they want to look at his genes, but then again that doesn't really make sense because down syndrome is not a hereditary disease. The amnio would show if the baby has down syndrome and if she's already getting that then there is really no reason for him to get any blood work. Sounds like she wants to see if he's the father.

  5. YOu should be on Jerry Springer with this question.

  6. I'm pretty sure down syndrome is tested by blood (at least, that's what I did all 3 times and its what I've always been taught).  Its a completely routine test, by the way.  IF they find anything in the blood test, then they can do an amniocentesis to get a more accurate test.  There is absolutely no reason why the father would need to be tested.  I mean, obviously, he's going to test negative.  lol  You know what I mean?  Only the baby would potentially test positive for an abnormal amount of chromosomes.

If they do need to do an amniocentesis, then yes, paternity could be determined at that time.  He has every right to request the test be done (he may have to pay for it) at that time.  However, she can refuse if its not a court ordered paternity test.

  7. Looks like this good doctor is trying to test his medicine courses on your boyfriend.  Testing a foetus for Downs syndrome is current practise for a mother who's pregnant for the first time after 35 years of age. As for testing the supposed father...hum.

  8. Why would anyone want to have a test to see if a child you are carrying has down syndrome?  Would it make a difference?  Regardless you are having  the child and will love it so I would tell them "NO" I wouldn't want to know.  If you know then you have 8 months or less worrying instead of being joyful and blessed to have a child

  9. down syndrome is caused by a trisomy on the 21 chromosome. if they ran a dna test on your husband they would be able to see whether or not he has down syndrome (and it would be very obvious). down syndrome is a mutation, and im pretty sure its not passed down from parent to child. there is no need for him to take a down syndrome test.

really it should just be the unborn baby getting it.
