Question:

Why would a fire remediation service send a bill directly to my insurance adjuster?

Following a house fire. I hired a nationally known company to clean and attempt to remove the smell. When I asked for an update on the costs to date. They informed that they would only send the bill directly to my insurance adjuster and not through me. Also, they insisted they be present at the first meeting, at my home, with the adjuster.

Thanks,

  1. Because the insurance company is the one that is going to pay them.

However, they should make the bill available to you.  And as the homeowner, it's a good idea to review the bill. This way you can confirm they did the work they are charging for.

Call your adjuster and let them know you want to review the bill prior to payment. The adjuster should give you a copy of it.  Also ask your adjuster if you will be on the check. The should make the check payable to you and the restoration service - so that you have to endorse the check too.

Being present at the meeting with the adjuster is a good idea. I usually like the restoration company to be there. That way we can get an idea of what needs to be done - so we are all on the same page.
