Why would a persons surface of the brain where it's supposed to be grooved apear smooth on an MRI?

  1. The condition that comes to my mind is lissencephaly, a serious disorder of what is termed neuronal migration. Essentially, during fetal development, the brain cells migrate into abnormal patterns. Affected children may appear normal at birth, but then develop seizures. Their heads are generally small and intelligence is greatly diminished. I hope this does not apply to your son.
