  1. Because in some species, only the newer branches set seed very well.  The older branches, at the bottom, are 'tired', and are taking extended vacations from producing offspring.


  2. A forest ranger once showed me bear scratches all over tree bark, and asked how far up I thought those scratches would be in ten years.

    He said they would be in the exact same place 'cause trees grow from the TOP.

    Ta-duh -- that's why most of the pinecones are up there too.
