Why would a prince like Harry go to war in Afghanistan?

He probably has political ambitions. Doing a stint in the army is a good thing to put on your resume when running for office.

I think that Harry just likes being one of the boys. From the clips that I saw of him in Afghanistan he was clearly enjoying himself and when asked what he missed most from England he simply said "nothing". Shame he has to come home as I feel sure he wants to continue his tour there like the rest of his pals.

Harry told his mum who wanted her boys to be normal boys that he wanted to be a soldier that could have something to do with it.

DAN P - Harry is barred from running for political office, the monarchy is officially independent of all political parties and so anyone in line to the throne can't have had previous political affiliations.

In answer to the question, Harry is a professional soldier - He is doing his duty and justifying his expensive training, it may have been harder for him to see active service but he is trained for it and there is no reason for him not to serve unless it affects the general security of British Troops (ie if there is a press leakage of location)

Well, first of all, he doesn't HAVE a royal throne. Prince Harry is third in line for the British throne, after his father and his older brother William. And Harry doesn't want the throne - all Harry wants is to be a normal young man, and that'll never happen. He's an English prince, and will be treated that way all of his life.

Perhaps he is looking for people to respect him. His mom died while he was young, and his father treated him different from William because he belived he (Charles) was not Harry's father initially. He has had a troubled past. Perhaps this is a rite of passage for him to be a man of the people.

Why? the answer is simple.

It was his life long ambition and dream to join the Army and now he's done it (WELL DONE MATE!)  and now he wishes to fight along his comrades in arms and good for him like many people have stated 'He's a natural soldier' and it says in the newspaper that he has killed 30 taliban, Why would anyone would wan't to waste that kind of talent.

And on the contrary Harry likes to do anything but sit in the palace he's not that kind of guy (you can clearly tell he's the son of Diana.....may she rest in piece).
