Why would a random guy suddenly start a convo with me?

i'm really inexperienced at this...this guy (my age) that works at the gym suddenly started talking to me when I passed him. He asked me questions about what college I'm going to, my college life, etc. I was confused...was he just being friendly? i dunno, is it common for strangers to just start talking to each other lol?

He likes you and is finding or trying to at least find some common ground if you don't like him mention your boyfriend "Me and my boyfriend love our college the food is so yummy" "So how is your college..."

It's common but mainly when a guy likes you.  He was probably attracted to you and didn't want to just approach you out of the blue so I gues she decided to go the old fashion and start talking to you.

yeah ive had that happen to me and then later i find out it was because the guy likes me

He's being friendly.  He likes you and/or wants to know more about you.  That happens when a guy sees an attractive girl.  You can speak to him without giving him all your personal information.

he is possibly flirting with you. I am pretty bad at stuff like this but i think he is. Whenever random guys come up to me they are flirting. Only i can be a bit dense and plus you know..going about my business..i want a pie..eek suddenly random guy is asking me annoying questions about my motorbike..my life. It kinda takes you by surprise.

If you like him be friendly but if you don't be cold and aloof.

Usually it is because he is hitting on you. But be careful, because I had that happen to me once and it was because he was trying to make another girl nearby jealous. If he does it to you again, you know he likes you.
