  1. because even if you had the worst meal in your life it was still served to you and still cleaned up after you No tip at all is just WRONG

  2. because they expect it

  3. idk

personally i dont think they do i wouldnt tip them

  4. Sadly tips are no longer seen as a "gratuity" and have become a portion of the waitperson's wages.  It stupid greedy resturant owners not wanting to pay living ages.  So water (aittrons) think they deserve a tip just to get paid.

It should be given as a show of thanks for decent service.  If the service is bad, no tip.

  5. because they live in America and we tend to think we are owed something for nothing.

  6. because they expect you to know that it's not their fault in some way....sorry, but if i tip than they won't raise h**l later about it...thus, the bad service continues.

  7. beacuse thats their salary.........the tips......so they expect more than they give.....

  8. Maybe they're only giving bad service cause they didnt get a tip before and since they are underpaid like hella...

but still you're right. normally they dont deserve any for bad service.

  9. Hourly pay for waitstaff are significantly lower per hour, mainly because they're expected to make up for it in tips. I think some servers just expect a good tip because they assume everyone understands that YOU are really expected to pay the bulk of their take-home.

That said, I was once chased down the block by an angry waitress (followed quickly by her manager) who wanted to know why we left her a quarter for a tip. She screamed at us, telling us we have to leave her a tip.

We did it because we didn't want her to think we'd FORGOTTEN to tip her. The fact is, she took our order and then never came back. The food was expedited by the kitchen by someone else and there were problems. And we needed drinks. And soooo many other reasons. The manager apologized to us and told us that we DIDN'T have to tip - it's not mandatory.

Frankly, I think once servers start to just "expect" great tips, that's when they should take a break from the restaurant business. They're in a SERVICE industry. h**l, they're called SERVERS. I've worked in restaurants before and the people who really take great service to heart and make it their #1 priority are the people who last.

  10. I think a lot of times "bad service" is no fault of the server. Maybe they are chronically understaffed and the servers have 3 times as many tables as they should have. Maybe the kitchen can't get their act together. Maybe they just got chewed out by their rotten boss and are barely holding together.

In general, leaving no tip makes them think you are a lousy tipper, if anything. If you have legitimate problems with the service, you should be bringing this up to the manager so they know why you are upset.

  11. Personally, after working at a restaurant (as a hostess, not a waitress) I have witnessed what the servers go through. Sometimes when we're extremely busy, understaffed, and under stress, it's hard for them to keep up with every table, so if they accidentally forgot the extra dressing on the side, it doesn't necessarily mean they are bad servers. Plus, they make most of their money from tips anyway, so I always try to be generous with the tips even if the service wasn't up to par.

  12. Keep in mind that the bad service may be a result of Cooks not putting out the right food or taking way to long! This can result in angry customers who blame their wait on the server.

Also, a server usually lives off their tips and most restaurant's don't add gratuity! In Florida, waiters only make $3.50 an hour so you can expect a grouchy, money hungry server every once in a while!

  13. Well, EVERY waiter/waitress has their own point of view I guess. The issue is not THEIR expectations, but rather yours, and the tip is the tool in  which you express that expectation.

Leaving NOTHING as a tip is ALWAYS a mistake. It CAN be construed as an oversight on your part. As such, NO modification of behavior will be accomplished.

The size of the tip has always been considered REASONABLY proportional to service rendered, WHATEVER that service is. Fast delivery of food, good menu advise, good catering skills, filled water glass, coffee at the proper time, cheerful attitude EVEN if all is not going well, are all part of the service contract between the customer and the server.

When poor service is definitely perceived, a CORRESPONDINGLY valued tip in also in order.

Remember in one of those gangster movies where the mob guys are talking about putting a hit out on one of their most hated enemies and one mobster says he would wack the guy   just for the fun of it? Another wise guy reminds the group that the La Castra Nostra don't work like that. SOMEbody has to put a CONTRACT out in order for a mob hit to be done proper.

So, one mobster FLICKS a 2 bit piece across the table to the anxious wacker and he catches under the cusp of his spoon. He raises the spoon to see the "financial consideration" being offered for the contract and says "consider it DONE"

As one who has earned the right (a paying customer) to WACK a waiter/waitress for bad service, just leave a TOKEN of your esteem on the table in the form of a 2 bit piece (a  quarter for you young folk) and they will SOON get the message. They MAY not reform, but at least they will KNOW where they stand...in the wacking order.

  14. their definition for bad service may be different from yours.

I'm a server and I know when I someone has gotten bad service from me and I don't expect a tip...

When I go out to eat I realize that servers can make mistakes.... its not always bad service just because something goes wrong... and many times it's not nessecarily the servers fault... as in steaks being cooked wrong and that sorta thing...I rate the service I receive by how willing the server is to accommidated my needs. If I ask for something to be fixed do they do it with a genuine smile.... that sorta thing..

I think its pointless and crazy to they you deserve a tip for bad service
