Why would a weaning (still handfed 2 times a day) African Grey suddenly start eating its own p**p? ?

I have a weaning T. African that has food available in between hand feedings. This morning and this afternoon I caught her eating p**p. She hasn't done it before.

  1. It doesn't relate to hand-feedings. Some birds just like to eat p**p. One of my cockatiels ate p**p. It's nasty, but it isn't a "problem" the way feather picking is; that is, there is nothing wrong that is making the bird act out by eating p**p. Now that she's weaning and trying new things, she's discovered that she finds p**p appealing, too. Sorry, but it's true. You can try to discourage it, but be warned that you may not have a whole lot of success.

  2. they do that if it is not cleaned up in time. It is harmless but I do not recommend you allow it to do it anymore.

  3. maybe she is curios
