  1. She probably gave her employer the wrong number when she started working.  When did she start the job?  The farther back you go, the more lax most employers were, most never asked to see an actual SS card.

  2. Something is very wrong here. The only people using the same SSN are identity thieves, most commonly now illegal aliens who have stolen a citizen's number. If husband and wife were using the same number, Social Security should have caught the mistake long ago.

  3. In cases of spouses, they do not always use their own social security for benefits.  They usually draw their social security benefits off the spouse who gets the most benefits (usually being the one who made the most money in their lifetime).  In this case, it could be that one of them is getting social security benefits off the other one, which is perfectly legal.  This may make it appear that they are both using the same SS number, when in fact they are not.

  4. My mother had her own social security number and there was a time when she worked outside of the home and put money into it.  However, her benefits were greater by drawing off of my father's social security.

Even a divorced person can draw off of their ex spouse's social security if they get better benefits.  I don't know if they had to be married for a certain length of time to do that.

For Medicare a person with an "A" suffix is drawing off of their own.  A female with a "B" suffix is drawing off her husband.  A female with a "D" suffix is a widow drawing off of her late husband.  If I remember correct a male drawing off of his wife's number would have a suffix of B1 and if he is a widower drawing off of his late wife's I believe it was D1.   I don't know exactly what the suffix would be for someone drawing off of an ex spouse, but they definitely can.   The ex spouse and the spouse can both draw of of a person's social security.

The A & B suffix on a Medicare number is not to be confused with the different Medicare plans where Medicare A pays for inpatient hospital and Medicare B pays for doctor and outpatient services.
