Why would aliens be kept a secret by the government?

If aliens DO in fact exist and the military has captured them, why wouldn't the government release that information to the public? I honestly don't see why it must be hidden from the public

besides if there really was a such things as aliens visiting the earth then do you think with their technological advantages they would allow themselves to be captured and imprisoned by a bunch of humans that don't even have the know-how to put a man on mars, I put people who believe in aliens in the same category as those who believe in god, unable to handle the fact that there is nothing more to life than waking up, going to work, eating a few meals, taking 1 good sh*t, and if your lucky you get laid every once in a while, so they cling to the idea that there is "more" to life.

MASS PANIC...people freak out and start doing stupid things...if in fact aliens did exist i think the government should keep it a secret for as long as they possibly could

I think that, if there were any aliens, I would want to know.  But in the case that they do exist, they should be kept secret... There was a case like this before, during The movie War of the Worlds, they played this on the radio.. when people turned it on during broadcasting, they missed the introduction and a mass breakout of paranoia and fear broke out.  People went to steal the necessities they would need to survive, and some even killed themselves.  If the government shared that kind of information, some people just wouldn't know how to handle it, and most people would probably be skeptical about the whole thing.  Some things are just better kept secret.  But I do agree that we shouldn't be treated like children... if there is something going on in our WORLD that could possibly be threatening then we deserve to know and possibly prepare to fight back.

Interesting topic, as I have always wondered the same thing. It is hard to believe that, if this vast universe theory holds true, we are the only ones in the entire universe. The fact of keeping it a secret would be idiotic. Because if they ever needed us to band together and battle an otherworldy threat, it would be better if we knew "the truth" and prepared for a possible event such as that. But I believe they have no aliens and "leak" stories such as Roswell and Area 51 so they can spend trillions of dollars on Military technology research without having to justify it for us.
