Question:

Why would an employer say

that they are unable to keep staff-this during an interview? I have had this happen twice now. The first one was just a crazy place with rude people, so I can see why.Half the staff was new and two weeks later, they ran ads for two of the positions that had only been filled for a month and a week. The other place was a lot nicer, but the person who interviewed me said the job I was interviewing for had had 3 people in it in the past 6 months or so. He actually said "we don't know why the staff does not stay."

Why would they SAY this? Are they looking for a reaction or are they just not worried about who they hire? The first place was completely unprofessional, from the woman who interviewed me in flip flops to the receptionist arguing with another staff member while paying her car bill. The other place is much smaller; the office manager has been there for years, the 2 other support staff members are both new.

I need a job, but these interviews have been crazy. I have another one this week where someone is retiring, so that may be better. I had 2 about 5-6 months ago and they were wonderful, but both went to internal applicants.

Anyone else experiencing this?

  1. Sometimes when an employer tells you they keep losing staff it's because they want you to realize that the job or environment is difficult; that or they are just plain stupid and unprofessional. However to really answer that I would need to know the type of job your applying for and I wonder what was the context of the sentence was when they told you this.  However, in either case if there is turnover, that's a sign that something is wrong, wether it's the job it's self, staff, or mgmt - theirs is definitely a problem and I would recommend not taking the job.  Good luck in your job search!

  2. Don't give up.  Make the most of your experience and skills in the next interview.  Everything will be alright for you.

    God bless.

  3. Wow, that's a treat during an interview! A good, professional interviewer would NEVER make that remark during an interview. If they truly don't know why the staff isn't staying, chances are they're not doing exit interviews, or the job is just that awful. I would wait for your next interview and see if that works out better.

As for the flip flops, I wear them every day, unless I absolutely can't. LOL  Of course, my office is a lot more laid back, with no outside contacts coming in. For an interview, though, I would definitely put on grown up clothes! Good luck with your job search!
