Question:

Why would an ice maker produce hollow ice?

I have an ice machine in my freezer at home. The past couple of days it started making weird looking ice. The ice is either half of a cube or hollowed. It is like the same shape but not solid. (it is frozen solid, but shaped different)

I tried to check to see if something was stopping it up, but it is hard to tell becauese I am not sure where to look. I don't see anything visably wrong with it.

  1. this happens when the outside edges of the cube freeze and the center doesn'tfreeze at all, or the unfrozen part drains away.

Nothing to worry about.  this is common in hot weather.  It might help to adjust the thermostat on your freezer to make it colder

also, keep the freezer door closed st all times if possible  keep the opening and closing of the freezer door to a minimum

  2. Do you have a filter on your refrigerator.  If so it could be clogged.  Low water pressure going into the i/m can cause hollow ice cubes.
