Question:

Why would an indoor cat suddenly get sick and die after a year?

I am heart broken about this. My father just told me yesterday his cat died. It also frustrates me because they never brought the cat to the vet for ANY shots throughout his short life. He wasn't fixed either. He was a good sized cat. Lots of meat on his bones, healthy appetite. Very playful. Got out once, but for a VERY short time. Just a couple minutes but he didn't go anywhere, he was afraid of the outdoors. I guess he started getting sick a couple months ago. Not eating often, vomiting, diarrhea. He lost lots of weight and once again, my dad didn't bring the pore guy to the vet. He seemed like he was feeling better about a week ago but the other day I guess he just laid down in his spot and passed away. I don't think it was feline leukemia, but anythings possible I guess. I'm so disappointed that they didn't help the cat when he was sick. I would like to know what may have happened.

  1. cats , as with anything with a pulse, get sick and die , sometimes for no apparent reason

  2. Sounds like cancer, especially with the weight loss.

  3. It could have been anything really. Kidney failure? But that also may be caused by other diseases, and if he had no shots it is no surprise. It doesn't matter if he was indoors, he can get diseases.

  4. Dont know, but you aound very sinceree so you have my sympathy. Some times things happen which we can't explain. Maybe your father couldnt afford to take him to the vet but the way you are speaking that sounds unlikely. So maybe he just aint an animal person. By that I mean maybe he was frightened himself or maybe he didnt know what to do. Dont be too hard on your father.

  5. A year is too quick for a lot of things to show up, I'd guess he was born with something wrong and slowly died of it. I'm so sorry for your loss.

  6. Cats get sick, like people get sick it could have been something in his food, and without any shots he would have been weak, I'm sorry about that :(

  7. a year old cat don't get sick from not having its shots they get sick in two or three months from not having their shots but if they make it a year they are alright with out them if the cat started getting sick after it got out it sounds like some kind of poison and it could get sick like people from mole in the house or asbestosis

not meaning to scare you but as any of the family members been sick after being at the house if so they better get checked out

  8. Does your father have any plants indoors?  Cats crave greens and some are poisonous to cats. If you are sure it wasn't feline leukemia, don't rule out a cancer. Cats and dogs do get it.  My sympathies. And I agree with you about the vet visit.
