Why would an insertion or deletion with a frameshift mutation have a more profound effect than a point mutate?

  1. A point mutation only changes one codon - meaning only one amino acid in the overall protein will be different (or maybe not! because of coding redundancies). Whereas with a frameshift mutation the reading frame is changed and the entire protein from that point on will be drastically affected.
