Sure the guy hits a lot of HR's. He's hit over 40 in each of his last 4 seasons, but HR's are an overrated category. The thing is though this guy seems to look to break the 200 mark in K's. In 3,674 career AB's this guy has struck out 1,197 and has a career high of 195 K's in 2004 and 194 in 2006. He's never even come close to a .300 average in a season, or .275 for that matter. Even with 4 consecutive 40 HR seasons this guy barely breaks 100 RBI, his highest in a season is 106 (for those that don't know Josh Hamilton was just shy of 100 at the All-Star break). He's not a stolen base threat and he's mediocre at best defensively. So what would any team see in this guy enough to bring him on to their ball club? If the Reds wanted to get rid of this guy, how hard would it be for them and would they really get much in return for him?

  1. 40 homers 100 rbis 100 base on balls  maybe a low average but he does get on base. As far as the Reds and Hamilton I still make this trade any day of the week. If you cant pitch you cant win more times than not

  2. ur right

but sumbody will take him because  u put him on a AL team and he can be a key contributer because i dont know about you but 40 home runs is 40 home runs

edit and ur acting like its a bad thing that he hits home runs and like wen u have runners on 1 & 2nd and he doenst move them over one base he moves them over to home and score

    lol

  3. Ryan Howard is the exact same way - leads the league in homers AND K's.

  4. I don't agree home runs are overrated. They're runs!

I don't think his appeal is his power. It's the OBP. He has a low average but he draws 100 BBs easily and thus he has a very high OBP. And the AL teams want high OBP players rather than average because they implement a long ball strategy and having guys on base is essential. I think he's worth a number 1 prospect if a contender needs the bat.

  5. An AL team would benefit the most because he could be their DH, but he doesn't want to be a DH (I respect him for that). He does strike out a lot, but Ryan Howard strikes out more, and people will always say how they wish they had him. Plus Howard is one of the worst defensive 1B in baseball (if not THE worst), so I dunno. I wouldn't want either personally. His defense, like you said, is mediocre at best. He does provide a lot of power though. I would prefer not to have him, but I could see certain types of team wanting someone like him (maybe someone like the Red Sox or Yankees).
