Last week 14 of the 140 panels of the Vietnam War Memorial were defaced with some kind of oily substance that, at last report may have done permament damage to The Memorial. I heard about it last night on a radio talk show and came in today and looked it up on the internet. Sure enough, there it was. However, I never saw anything about it on TV or in the newspapers (maybe I missed it, but according to some of the article on the internet, they did web searches of major media sources and found nothing).

I'm not good at tying websites to my questions, but if you key in Vietnam War Memorial defaced you can read the articles.

Whether you are con or lib I think you should be disgusted by this act of vandelism.

My question again is, why would anyone do this, what should be done to them if they are caught, and why has it not been covered by main-stream media?

  1. WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS? WHY DID JANE FONDA GO TO NORTH VIETNAM?

WHY DID THE SOME PEOPLE PUT THE AD IN THE PAPER ABOUT GENERAL PETRAUS?

WHY DO TERRORISTS BLOW THEIR SELVES UP?

  2. try typing in Vietnam War Memorial Vandalized-and you will find alot more websites about it.. many news outlets..Always think simple when searching on the net

Idiots would do it, someone with to much time on their hands and not enough sense.. and I think they should get the stiffest penalty

  3. That is just disgusting!  All those poor men and women who lost their lives over there to be sh*t on again by idiots who are evil.  I have a great uncle whose name is on that memorial.

I agree with the BS that this media is doing.  I guess they think that OJ is more worthy of it.  That is just BS!  Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

  4. The AP released a story about it and it was run by at least 100 different newspapers and other news outlets across the country.

  5. The only way to answer your questions are to hazard guesses, aside from the question about what punishment the perps should receive.

My guess is that this was done as some form of protest of American efforts in newly liberated Iraq. I imagine the intent would be to somehow try to tie the situation in Iraq to the Vietnam war.

As far as what should be done to them, I believe Washington DC has specific laws related to defacing public property. If the perps are ever caught, that's the best that we can do with them, regardless of how crude and disrespectful we may think the act is.

As far as televised and print outlets, there are two reasons why no one would cover this. The first (and the one I wish I could believe) is that there were bigger news stories to cover that day and there just wasn't time or room to cover this. In this premise, the story would not have been considered enough of a ratings grabber or seller of papers to include in the daily news (they do, after all, have to pay their bills).

The other reason would be that if the media outlets are opposed to our work in Iraq, covering this would be counter to that ideal, as it associates crude and disrespectful criminals with those that oppose the Iraq effort.

I feel that either premise is unacceptable. The American people (at least in theory) have enough sense to be able to make informed decisions for themselves if they have all the facts. Either the media outlets are inept or intentionally trying to subversively shape public opinion with omission of important facts.

A crime committed by some misguided individuals does not negate anyone's right to have and express the same opinion that those criminals held, and the American public knows this.

  6. How sick and sad. I haven't seen it on the news either. As Fedup said, the media is more interested in OJ.

I am going to google it and read about it.

  7. If the main stream media covers these acts, the Vandals get what they want ,the publicity, and are only encouraged to do something again.
