Why would farmers want to sell their land?

I needed this question answered for reference purposes because I live in a region where development is increasing and farmers are decreasing. I needed to know some reasons of why the farmers would want to give up their land. What makes them want to move, and lastly if the benefits out-weigh the perils. In most farming areas, especially outside of big cities, developers are coming in and offering the farmers quite a bit of money to sell.  And by quite a bit I mean usually more than they'd make in ten years working the land.  

In almost all cases that I know about, the farmers don't want to sell, but eventually, the costs of farmning the land are not giving them enough benefits to stay on their land.

The problem is that once the land is developed, it won't be near as valuable for farming (if the buildings/concrete were ever cleared).  So, once the land has been deveolped, it's almost useless for farming.  That' s one reason many farmers wait so long to sell, or don't want to.

the amount of money you can make off the land is more than you can make by farming and so alot of times it makes more sense to sell than to keep farming

Land prices have gone up tremendously.  Perhaps they need the money and think now is a good time to sell.

It's all about the GREEN. Not the green fields of crops, but the green of money. Would you want to work hard for little return, or would you take a lump sum to be able to retire and live comfortable without having to worry about tractor payments, droughts, floods, or a freeze that will kill all of your crops for the year.

They are seeing GREEN.

I know what you mean,the area where I live was once covered with growing orange and grapefruit trees,other sections grew cotton and almost any vegetable on the market,now all this fertile land is being covered with concrete,and the goods now have to come from other parts,what will happen when all the fertile land is covered and the population will grow twice it's size

For money! And because they cannot afford the taxes.

If a city grows so that it spreads out into farming areas, land values go WAY up. This means the tax the owner has to pay on the land goes way up, since it is calculated as a fraction of the value of the land. So the farmer can no longer make enough money growing crops to pay the taxes and at the same time the value of his land has gone WAY up so that he can make a big profit by selling.
