Why would he say this if we're friends?

My guy friend, that I HAD a crush on, told me and this one guy (while we were waiting for our other friends to come with us to a dance party) that he really like this other girl, but now she is with someone else, and he used to be with his stupid girlfriend. I told my friend, but when she asked him about it, he repeatedly denied it. Why?

Two possibilities: One, he denies because it is the fact. Two, he denies because he doesn't want others know that he is a looser. Don't push him.
