  1. because some fish have a lot of mercury in it. if one fish ate a fish and another fish ate that fish and a bigger fish ate that fish and so on, it will add up to a lot of mercury, which is dangerous to the body. also, in Alaska, there is this city that when the women gives birth there all girls, because i think it has to do with something with the eggs, but im not too sure.

  2. Industrial plants such coal burning  and (ironically enough) chlorine chemical plants, release mercury into the air and water contaminating fish whether it be in a reservoir or a "pristine" trout stream.

There is a certain amount that a human can consume however, the body has NO use for any heavy metal such as mercury, lead, or manganese. That metal is stored away in your body. A person can only consume X amount for safety reasons.

Any developing human being, from fetus to adolescent, is susceptible to such toxins....

"Mercury is a persistent, bio-accumulative neurotoxin that can remain active in the environment for more than 10,000 years. It endangers pregnant women, the unborn, young children and other vulnerable populations. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientists report that more than one child in six born in the United States could be at risk of having developmental disorders as a result of mercury exposure in the mother’s womb"

But I got news for ya....there are TONS of things a pregnant or new mother should worry about haha...

look up phthalates....now thats some scarey stuff..

A great book to read which has all kinds of related issues is called...

  3. a lot depends on the water quality,, lead can also be in the water.....normally the state will post a sign if the quality of the water is bad. or a least limit you to one meal of fish a week.

  4. they are both right Mercury or/and lead are found in a lot of fish now. Especially TUNA. It is better not to expose children or unborn babies to anything more than they are already are.

  5. if the water is not polluted or contaminated then the fish are fine to eat, local ministry guidelines set out will tell of fish consumption or non-consumption and of amounts suitable for people to eat. These books are available from local sporting goods stores in Ontario have lake references and fish species and edible amounts tables for most major lakes in the province I'm sure such books are available for each state also
