Why would my GSXR keep shutting off while im riding?

I just did a oil and filter change about 2 weeks ago. I put 20w 50 synthetic oil in there. Note: it's car oil but I have been told that car oil if fine and that 20w 50 is fine, but something is wrong as It keeps shutting off during rides. Any help? Thanks guys!

  1. Sounds like a loose battery terminal might be your problem. Make sure both terminals are nice and tight, making solid contact. I have seen  a cheap battery do the same thing you are describing, because even when the bolts were tightened, there was still a small gap between the terminals.  This would cause intermittent problem with the electrical circuitry on your bike. Also, would be helpful to know the year and model of the bike.


  2. If you put too little oil in, the engine would run hot and might shut off. Eventually you'd blow the engine. make sure you put the right amount in.

    So before the oil change you had no problems but immediately after, the problems started?

    if that's the case, pull the plastic back off and check all hoses, cables, and connections to be sure you didn't bump anything loose.

    Has the bike been taking synthetic or did you just switch from dyno oil?

    I would have said check the kickstand switch and cable but you said the engine studders. If it were the kickstand switch it would just shut off without studdering.

  3. More info would be helpful.  When does it quit?  Only when hot?  Only when idling?  Have you modified the fuel mixture (power commander) at all?  Is it running poorly in any other respect?  Are the plugs good? Air filter?

    The oil isn't going to make it shut off.  If you could offer a bit more info, I'm sure the community here will take care of you.

    Switching from dino (natural) oil to synthetic won't lead to the problems you describe.  Still a litttle hazy on your symptoms, however.  

    If the engine runs OK, then shuts completely off, I'd guess at an electrical problem.  A poster below suggested the sidestand switch.  That might be a good place to look.

    However, you describe engine stuttering.  If the engine runs poorly all the time, I'd still put my money on a fuel mixture issue.  If you give it gas and it blubbers, you're looking at a mixture that's too rich.  Have there been any modifications to the air filter, exhaust, or carbs?  If your exhaust flows more than stock, your carburetion setting may be off.

    Is there an inline fuel filter?  Is it clean, if there is one?  Did the bike sit for a long time?  If so, you may have rust in the tank, or other schmutz clogging the fuel line.
