Question:

Why would my debit card get rejected in an ATM?

I've had an HSBC debit card with paypass for about a year now.

I used it in an ATM for the first time yesterday, and it said cannot complete transaction after I typed in the amount.

I tried it at 3 different ATMs, including HSBC's ATM. They all basically said the same thing. I tried withdrawing from both my savings and my checking account.

I have sufficient funds in both accounts. I also know that my debit card can be used in ATMs. And yes, I typed in the correct PIN.

Why else would it not let me take my money?

Thanks for the help.

  1. Perhaps the card has a limit as to how much you can withdraw at a time.

Or maybe there's a freeze on your card since it was unusual for you to use an ATM.

You will have to call the bank and ask.

  2. Lot's of different things could have been going on. It could have a daily withdrawal limit, (most banks it's $500) the system at you bank could have been down, or it could have been blocked for fraud review. How long have you had the accounts? Are you sure the amount you were trying to withdrawal had been posted to your account. If you had just made the deposit, the funds may not have been available yet. If you deposited cash after the cut-off time or a check at any time it may not have been processed yet meaning you couldn't withdraw the money. Most likley a system thing from the decline code you're saying the machine was giving. Try again od call your banks customer service number and let them look into it for you.
