Question:

Why would my friend/co-worker stick me with the tip? Is she just cheap or rude or both?

We had eaten lunch at a Mex. restaurant, her idea & a suggestion of a local that it was good food. She ordered a huge combo plate, ate the whole thing & only said later that it was horrible food. We paid seperately at the register in order to get seperate receipts. I turned around to put a tip on the table for mine & she was out the door already having not left a penny for a tip. The service was good & timely so I have no idea why someone would do this except that she said the food was awful. I left what I could for both but was wanting opinions on this?

  1. Maybe she didnt have enough money to pay for her lunch and a tip and didnt realize it or maybe she was just being cheap. You need to ask her. She may also have simply forgotten or assumed you would be leaving a tip big enough for both of you.

  2. Maybe she is just rude...some people can't help but be *******.  They don't respect that waitstaff earns money off of tips and if the food was unsatisfactory...she should have taken it up w/ mgmt...not the server.

  3. She sounds cheap, rude and inconsiderate.

I'd ask her why she did that.

I also would never agree to go out to eat with her again.

  4. I would confront her about it.

Maybe you will find out why she did it from HER.

Shes the only one that will know.

  5. She may have reasons she hasn't shared w. you:

She may have had words with the server when you weren't there. Or may have been treated bad on an earlier visit.

I can't believe no one else has considered these things (yeah, she could be cheap,..but a penny a a tip has always had the ,meaning " I want you to remember what i thought the service was worth!")

PS=She didn't 'stick you' with the tip (as it was your choice to put down more after she left it). Then again, it may have been wrong of her to give the waitress the impression her tip represented your feelings, too!

  6. Cheap, cheap, cheap!!!!!!!  I hate that it is so rude!!!!!!!!!

  7. It's funny that you automatically assume the worst about your "friend."  Perhaps she paid with a credit/debit card and in that case, wrote in the tip.  Perhaps she gave the tip directly to the server (which I have done).  Also, there are countries/regions in which tipping is not the norm.  Perhaps it's a cultural thing?  Or maybe she didn't have the money to tip and will come back later.  I did this at a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party once.  I apologized to the waitress and told her I'd come back later with a tip.  She said not to worry, but I came back with a $20--she was very pleased.  So don't assume the worst and if she is really a friend, you could ask if you're that concerned.  And if she's not, you could still ask.  If you find that you don't like her answer, go to lunch by yourself or with someone else.  Have a nice day.

  8. shes both cheap and rude.....b careful who you dine with you just never know!!!!!!
