Question:

Why would our rabbit pee in the box he is sleeping in?

Could it be the box we built for him to sleep in is too big? Also I didn't have any straw at the moment so I put some towels in there for him to sleep in. If we stuffed it with straw would that help deter him from peeing in there?

  1. I have found that bunnies like to pee in the boxes. This is why, when I had a bunny that was expecting, I didn't put the baby-box in until a couple of days before the bunnies were due to be born.

What I do, is have a box that has a removable bottom.  Either a tray or a board that can be changed as needed.

    Good luck :-D

Ahh just read your additional notes.  Just an idea, but you may want to put a wire bottom in the 'bedroom' , have a hinged roof, and put a board in the bottom of the 'bedroom' that can be replaced as needed.

Gypsum board is a good idea.

  2. Rabbits will pee and poo wherever they are.  The most sanitary and healthy flooring for a rabbit is a cage with a wire floor. It must be the right kind and size wire. Large enough to allow pellets to fall through and small enough to be ok for the bunnies feet. 1x1/2 inchgalvanized wire is the standard size used for cage floors. The bunny will pee and poo in the same place in their cage. they can be litter box trained due to this habit. But in a box with hay, just a mess waiting to happen.

  3. Usually rabbits just go to the toilet in one place in the hutch/cage. Maybe he has chosen that corner. Try moving the bed. Sorry if this doesn't help alot!
