disabilities once they turn 18? I know they're technically not a child, but since they aren't able to hold a job or drive a car, etc, it would be difficult for them to move out. Also, it was recommended they stay in school later than average, and its hard enough for anyone to balance working Full time and HS full time.

  1. It is because of ignorance.

  2. I can't even believe that's an issue. I know so many "normal" 20-somethings that live at home with their parents.

  3. Some people are jealous thinking the child has it easy.. They are wonderful parents  to carry on the responsibility  with bringing their child into the world. It is no ones elses buisness.

  4. I don't know anyone who has done this. Most parents I know whose children have disabilities continue to allow them to live in their home long after they turn 18.

  5. I don't believe any parent of a developmentally disabled child would leave their child outdoors at 18; they would live at home or in a group home.  In fact, it is becoming common for parents of special needs children to consider not letting the child live at home.  It all comes down to what any other person may want at a specific age: independence.  Consider this scenario: Your a 30-year old man with a particular disability, then you are a 30-year old "typical" adult.  Would the typical adult want to still live with Mom and Dad?  I think parents become so accustomed for caring for their their children that they fail to realize and/or accept that it is a natural trait for EVERYONE to leave the nest.  So the child grows into a middle-aged adult with elderly caregivers.  Then the caregivers are no longer to care for the child (or they die).  The grown adult is left alone and ill-prepared to living away from home.  It is quite a sad situation many are put into.
