It means that you do boring things and are not doing things that are extreme. Like just playing or staying on computers all days means you should go and get a life. Liek go out and talk to people or go out and do things rather than live a boring life.

Iv'e got a car in the driveway , I't has a broken transmission.

So , even though I technically have a car , I will never go anywhere till I get one that works.

Firstly that's just a figure of speech. Secondly they are just sarcastically trying to give you advice,as in their trying to suggest to you that you should focus your energy into other ideas.

If you cant even understand simple social expressions such as "get a life" and you are taking such rhetorical statements literally then its no wonder that people are insulting you. Somehow however id say you couldn't actually be this ignorant to the mechanics of modern slang and that your just trying to be a smart ****, in which case you are really a sad case.

They mean that "a life" includes all aspects of good living, including a social life, love life, and being able to let yourself have fun
