  1. The Prince is a classic in cynical techniques for leadership.  It is not a book about how to govern well, but how to acquire and keep power and the focus is maximum cynicism.  It totally applies today, with Karl Rove for example, telling the voters of Ohio that Kerry was going to take away their Bibles, or visiting Georgia just a couple of weeks before Georgia attacked Russia--to scare the American people because when Americans feel insecure stupid people tend to vote Republican even though they usually create the problems that ruin peoples real lives.  It works, they get elected and then they get to loot and rob the treasury and drive the middle class that voted for them into poverty.  Machiavellian all the way, 100%--power for its own sake with zero concern about governing well.

  2. It shows how to use your power to get people to do what you need them to do.

Things have not changed at all since the book came out
