Question:

Why would she ask me this?

Okay, this is kind of a dumb question to ask, but anyway, a while back, I had a music teacher who made us put random notes together so she could check them, and make sure that we did the right number and knew how to organize them. Anyway, after she checked mine, she asked me, "Did you ever play an instrument before," or, "Do you play an instrument," and I said no, so she just said okay, but why would she ask me that? Did the notes sound good together or something?

  1. First, there are no dumb questions!  Second, you probably showed some natural musical talent that interests the teacher.  Ask her!  It sounds very positive!

  2. At first it sounded to me like she thought that you played an instrument before, or had the ability to read music.... maybe it was so good that she thought this girl is familiar with music notation and were putting her on......or, and I don't mean to sound mean but, maybe it was so bad that she thought that you had no experience or knowledge of theory or music notation. But I'm thinking that my first thought was correct, maybe you have perfect pitch and are a musical genius, you never know, why don't you ask her ?????

  3. I'm not sure I quite understand what exercise she had you do... I assume you were asked to write the notes on a staff and then she graded them by either the way they sounded or if they were organized by chords.

I can say that as a music teacher, if I ask, "Have you ever played an instrument before?" that it means that I am seeing potential in their work, and I want to know, is it they already know this, or are they showing ability to organize their thoughts musically.  My guess is it was at least some kind of compliment in your work.  :)

  4. Maybe the notes did sound good together.

  5. Yeah my music teacher asked me if I played an instrument after he was teaching us it and I played really well.  I actually did play that instrument, so I said yes.  In your case, the notes must have somehow fallen into place so well that your teacher thought you composed music or something.
