Why would should anyone tip on a carryout order?

According to Emily Post, the nation's foremost authority on etiquette, tipping for carryout orders is unnecessary. Restaurants determine their prices based on the cost of dining in. When you order carryout, you pay for the cost of dining in but receive none of those benefits of dining in. Therefore, an additional tip is not recommended according to EmilyPost. There are exceptions of course but the general rule still stands. After all, do we tip at Subway? The person not only takes the order, but he makes the sandwhich, packages it and often rings you up. None of you tip the Subway employee? And let's not lie and embellish what the server does on takeout orders. The hostess takes the order and brings it to the kitchen. The cooks prepares and box the food. The server puts the box in a sack with condiments, and napkins. She does not carry it to your car; that's curbside service. You walk inside to pick it up but the server should get 10%?

  1. a tip means To Insure Promptness.  If its carryout its not necessary to tip.

  2. I agree, there is no need to tip on take-out , I do because the service industry makes you feel you have to.  I am also sick of servers complaining about the industry they work in, and how much they make in tips because every one know that servers make more money than your average daily working american.  Tipping is so out of control...why should I have to tip 20% for opening my bottle of bud or packing up my take out food.  The restraunt industry are all over paid brats, that don't know what it's like to work a 40 hour work week and actually pay those taxes to the goverment.  And if your point is what the h**l it's only a dollar, then why the h**l do they need that dollar soooo bad.

  3. Ok... so most of you that have answered have not worked in a restaurant! So here is what I think, if you order from a restaurant and you walk in to get the to go order then give the person a buck or 2 my god people do you really need that dollar that bad. If you were trying to save you would be at home cooking so whats the deal here it's a little something for the person to say here thanks for doing what you do. If you think 5.15 and 2.13(Texas) is soooo much money that you can't tip a little or a lot that is crazy. Oh and by the way this whole subway argument is silly because what it comes down to is appreciation for the service one provides you- if I could tip them I would. Let me also say to those who do not know- if you think that most do not tip on to go orders you would be wrong, most do and that just makes those who don't even worse. Yes even on to go orders! By the way while we are on the subject if you drink from the bar while eating make sure and tip extra for that because the server tips out 3% to the bar! So please and I say this to all who are reading, if you can't afford a nice tip then do not go out!!!!!!!   I have decided to add some additional info so that you will feel the question has been answerd. Employees at a place like McDonald's and Subway have an hourly wage based on the fact that they do not receive tips. People in a restaurant such as the hostess or server are paid a wage based on the fact that they will receive a tip on top of that wage. The resturant industry has set up the wages as so and then when people do not tip the employee suffers not the restaurant. So while you have a valid question I hope that you understand now why it is important to tip even when you feel like it is somewhat unreasonable.

  4. Tipping on carryout is unnecessary and, in my opinion, rude of the individual to expect.  I dont give the greasy kid at McDonalds a tip for fixin my Big Mac (even when he gets it right).

  5. You shouldn't tip on carry out because they get minimum wage, and higher, where as a waitress/waiter rely on their tips as the majority of their paycheck.

  6. I will contradict your facts... have you worked in a restaurant before? They are NOT all the same. The hostess does not always take the order, most of the time its the bar. The server rings in the order, puts all your boxes together, checks them to make sure they are all correct with the ticket, puts all condiments, silverware and napkins inside the box, prints your ticket and brings it to you. Seems to me the server does most of the job. Also you cannot, CANNOT compare a server with a subway employee. Subway employees makes about $7.00 an hour. Severs make 2.13 on average. Of course you shouldn't tip someone that makes over minimum wage. DUH! To me this is all stupidity. I do not think you shoul tip 20% for carryout but you should tip something!

  7. i agree you should only recieve a tip if you do something to deserve it .

  8. tipping is respectful where the heck is ur manners boy

  9. A tip (or gratuity) is a payment to certain service sector workers beyond the advertised price. The amount of a tip is typically computed as a percent of the transaction minus taxes.[1] These payments and their size are a matter of social custom. Tipping varies among cultures and by service industry. Though by definition a tip is never legally required, and its amount is at the discretion of the person being served, in some circumstances failing to give an adequate tip when one is expected would be considered very miserly, a violation of etiquette, or unethical. In some other cultures or situations, giving a tip is not expected and offering one would be considered condescending or demeaning. In some circumstances (such as tipping government workers), tipping is illegal and considered a bribe.

  10. What do you mean by "sob story"? I hope that you are not looking at this issue from your privileged, highly educated, extremely fortunate point of view. I also hope that as a doctor with multiple degrees you are not begrudging servers who make a lot less money than yourself. Surely someone with your financial status can part with a few bucks.

I had to work a lot of crappy jobs to pay for my education. I now teach at a medical school and even though it's difficult I see many students who bust their butts in lousy serving jobs.

Waiters and waitresses earn less than minimum wage and truly depend on their tips. Even servers who make minimum wage earn less than the national poverty level. I think a little bit of empathy is needed here. ( A good trait to develop anyway, especially if you are going to be a physician)

I am now in a position where I can tip well and I do. But it wasn't always that way. I earned my education with a lot of hard work and remember well how completely awful, demoralizing and dehumanizing server work can be.   So Ms. Post says it's not necessary to tip carryout servers. Yes, true from an etiquette point of view but these people work d**n hard for almost nothing. Have a heart.

  11. think depends to you if you want to give tips...my speciall advice to you is to pay without changes exactly what receipt you see.
