I have a front projection theatre system. Last week, my projector would not start up, but there was lights blinking on it. I called Sony, the manufacture of the projector, and they instructed me to plug it directly into the wall. Why would this make a difference?

  1. Surge protectors often clamp high voltage spikes and clamp current to protect digital electronics.

However - projector bulbs are high current, power devices.  I believe they need a spike in the first few seconds to ignite.  A surge suppressor may not be right for a this type of device.

  2. I prefer using a UPS (with a constant output voltage!) rather than surge-protector.

I am not sure how plugging directly into the wall would help. Sony's service is at its worst at present.

  3. Could be a way to determine if the fault might have been with your surge protector.
