Why would someone get a Ph.D. in computer science. what does it mean and what can you do with this sheepskin?

  1. A Ph. D. is Ph. D.; you won't have it for free.

    It depends on your advisor and the choice of your thesis.

    It could be a boring thesis, like "Optimizing a b-tree when the processor is idle" or new way to structure and search the Internet to find more meaningful information.

    Computer science is still a new field where you can make significant contributions, for example:

    -- robotics

    -- artificial intelligence

    -- interface living tissues and electronics (see Carnegie Mellon)

    -- parallel processors.

    -- applications in medicine

    -- speech synthesis ...


  2. The best reason is to become a professor or the personal satisfaction of being called Doctor.

  3. Someone with a Ph.D. is probably a teacher in a college or University.  Someone wishing a career in computers would be better off with a BS in computer science and an MBA.
